Whitney Masterpiece Sparks Imaginations

This year, the VIsK neighborhood study extended to the Whitney Museum of American Art. During their visit, students explored three thought-provoking works of art, with Alexander Calder’s Circus stealing the show. This whimsical and kinetic masterpiece sparked their imaginations, inspiring them to create their own interpretations.

Building on this inspiration, the students brought their learning to life during Rhythms, performing their own circus acts. They then turned to the block area, constructing their own version of the Whitney Museum, complete with miniaturized versions of Calder’s Circus and other works they designed.

After the trip, the VIs handwrote notes to the museum educator. One student wrote, “Dear Sophie, thank you for the tour. I loved the Ruth Asawa sculpture. Do you like your job?” Letter writing took on an added dimension for the children, as this was their first experience writing messages to send beyond the school community.

The study culminated in joyful play within their recreated museum, seamlessly blending art, community, literacy, and creativity in a way that only C&C students can.
