VIIs (Second Grade) Group Teacher |
City and Country School seeks a VIIs (Second Grade) Group Teacher for the 2025–2026 academic year, beginning in late August 2025.
Lower School Group Teacher reports to the applicable division director and is an integral part of the teaching faculty. The Lower School Group Teacher approaches instruction with an interdisciplinary approach, finding authentic ways to connect course materials to student’s understandings of social studies. Our teachers bring warmth, patience, and understanding to the classroom every day, encouraging children to learn and grow. This is a bargaining unit position.
Responsibilities
- Encourage lifelong thinking and exploration for students through various open-ended materials; blocks, paint, clay, paper, wood, sand, and water
- Develop, revise, and teach lower school curriculum (nursery through second grade)
- Collaborate with Specials Teachers, Specialists, and Division Heads to find ways to integrate instruction with other curricular subjects, namely social studies
- Maintain an equitable and inclusive learning environment
- Communicate effectively and establish strong working partnerships with families, students, colleagues, and administrators
- Write reports and conduct Parent/Teacher conferences
- Provide curriculum updates to Learning Specialists to support ongoing education
- Attend weekly staff meetings
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field, Masters preferred
- 3-5 years experience teaching with a progressive approach
- Professional field experience is a plus
- Developmental knowledge of and experience with elementary aged children
- Experience developing and revising curriculum with an integrative approach
- Willingness to work in close collaboration with colleagues and children
- Familiarity with project-based, experiential teaching and lesson development
- Commitment to creating a culture of equity and inclusion
- Effective classroom management skills
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
- Valid First Aid, Adult and Infant CPR Certificate issued by an authorized agency

Salary
This position has a salary range of $68,675 - $99,736 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications. This position is in-person five days per week at the school’s campus in Manhattan’s West Village.

The substitute teacher reports to the applicable Lower School Division Director and is an integral part of the classroom support team. Subs are called upon based on varying school needs.
Responsibilities
- Supervising students during class, lunch, and periods of activity
- Following the lesson plan provided by the teacher
- Facilitating lessons with various learning materials
- Promoting good behavior and high-quality engagement
- Collaborating with lead teachers, assistant teachers, and school administrators to ensure that students are safe
- Managing the classroom to encourage student participation, minimize distractions, and maintain a positive learning atmosphere
- Adapting teaching methods to meet the individual needs of your students
- Supervising students both inside and outside the classroom This includes the hallways, the playground, and the cafeteria
- Attending parent-teacher conferences if necessary
- Meeting each class on-time and ensuring the classroom and work area are clean and tidy
- Giving details to the teacher about what happened in class
- Floating throughout the day as needed for coverage
- Respecting all school policies and regulations at all times

- Strong verbal and written communication skills
